Closing Note: Bernadette Noonan

Every so often, a closing note is less about wrapping up and more about saying thank you. This is one of those. I wanted to take these last few paragraphs to reflect on Bernadette Noonan, and on what it means to be part of a game that’s held together by people who care deeply and say so quietly.

Soccer taught me early that nobody succeeds alone. You can have the best touch, the best training, the best intentions, and still need someone to pass you the ball at the right moment. Bernadette was one of those people for many in the game — someone who understood the value of support, and who gave it freely.

I’m wary of grand tributes, because I suspect she would have found them a little embarrassing. So instead I’ll say what feels true. She cared about the community. She cared about doing the work properly. And she believed, without needing to announce it, that the game could be better for the women who came next.

That belief is the through line of so many careers in this sport. It’s the reason we keep showing up when the funding is thin and the headlines are quiet. It’s the reason we mentor younger players and share what we’ve learned. Someone once did that for us, and we pass it along.

There’s a lesson in that for all of us. We often wait for big moments to express gratitude, but the truest tributes happen in ordinary days: a note of thanks, a phone call, an hour spent listening. If this reflection nudges anyone to reach out to someone who shaped them, then it’s done its job.

So thank you, Bernadette, for everything you gave and everything you inspired. The pitch feels a little different without you, but the work you cared about continues, and so do we.

That’s the closing note. May we all leave the game a little better than we found it.
