Gonna Need a Minute…

Some weeks in sports media, you finish reading the news and simply stare at the wall. Not out of despair, necessarily. More out of the need to process something that moved faster than expected. This is one of those columns. I’m going to need a minute, and I suspect you might, too.

The business of women’s sports has been on a remarkable run of attention, and with attention comes a flood of announcements. New partnerships. New plans. New promises. It’s exciting, and it’s also a lot to absorb. Taking a minute isn’t a sign of cynicism. It’s a sign that you want to understand what you’re cheering for.

Here’s the thing I keep coming back to. Growth stories are easy to tell in the abstract and harder to evaluate in detail. Who is benefiting? Which commitments are lasting? Which are headlines designed to ride a wave? A good reporter, and a good fan, learns to ask those questions without losing their enthusiasm.

I’ve been around long enough to remember when the idea of a full broadcast schedule for women’s sports seemed ambitious. Seeing the progress now is genuinely moving. At the same time, I know progress has a way of being uneven, and I’d rather celebrate it honestly than pretend every gap has been closed.

There’s also the human side. Behind every business decision are athletes who plan their careers around it, staffers who build the product, and fans who invest their time and loyalty. When a deal changes, those people feel it first. Coverage that remembers them tends to be better coverage.

So what do I do with my minute? I try to slow down, read the fine print, talk to people closest to the work, and resist the urge to turn every development into a hot take. The sport deserves careful attention as much as it deserves cheerleading.

Minute over. Back to work, and back to the story. There’s a lot more to say, and I promise to say it with a clearer head.
