Some people leave an imprint on a community that is hard to measure and impossible to forget. Writing about Jason is difficult for that reason. There’s no tidy summary that captures what a person means to those who worked beside him, laughed with him, and relied on his steady presence. So I’ll try to say a few honest things.
What stays with me is the feeling of being welcomed. Spaces shaped by thoughtful people have a particular warmth, a sense that you don’t have to perform to belong. Many of us have known the relief of walking into a room and being met with real interest. That kind of generosity is rarer than it should be.
In a field built on deadlines, schedules, and constant motion, it’s easy to forget to stop and pay attention to one another. Remembering Jason is, in part, a reminder to do exactly that. To ask the follow-up question. To thank someone for the work no one else sees. To make time for the small kindnesses that end up mattering most.
Grief has its own pace, and there’s no right way to carry it. Some of us find comfort in telling stories, some in quiet, some in getting back to work as an act of tribute. All of those are valid. What matters is that we make room for each other and let the memory live in how we treat the people around us.
I’d like to think the best way to honor someone is to keep alive the qualities we admired in them. Curiosity, patience, humor, and care for the people on the team. These aren’t abstractions; they’re habits, and habits can be passed along. Every time we practice them, a bit of that influence continues.
To those who knew him better than I did, I offer my sympathy and my gratitude for sharing your memories. To those reading who may have lost someone dear, I hope these words feel like company. You’re not alone in missing someone whose absence is felt in so many ordinary moments.
We’ll keep telling the stories, and we’ll keep trying to build the kind of community he would be proud of. That’s not a conclusion, just a promise. Thank you, Jason, for what you gave us. We’re carrying it forward, and we’re grateful.
